How Cambridge Bay Wrestling Club Can Transform Lives

Introduction:

In the face of unimaginable personal trauma and a shattered family, the Cambridge Bay Wrestling Club (CBWC) has played a pivotal role in the life of one remarkable individual. This blog post delves into the profound impact the CBWC has had on this young man’s journey, as he navigated through grief, dysfunction, and emotional challenges. With unwavering support, mentoring, and a nurturing community, the CBWC provided him with a safe space to heal, grow, and find hope amidst the darkest times.

A Beacon of Support:

At the tender age of 10, he found himself in a harrowing situation, witnessing his brother’s tragic suicide. This traumatic event plunged their family into dysfunction, and his behavior at school became concerning. However, an Adult Team member recognized the potential within this individual and initiated the 100km club, offering prizes for every milestone reached. He eagerly joined, finding solace in the discipline, challenge, and physical exertion the club offered. Gradually, classroom behavior improved, laying the foundation for his involvement with the CBWC.

Finding Purpose in Wrestling:

His path to wrestling began when they approached an Adult Team member, expressing an interest in joining practices despite being younger than the other participants. With dedication and a commitment to early mornings and self-discipline, he started attending CBWC practices regularly. Their enthusiasm for wrestling blossomed, and they spoke of how the sport was shaping his life and providing a sense of purpose.

Overcoming Obstacles:

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 disrupted training and competition opportunities. However, the CBWC remained a constant source of support. During this time, he participated in a running group organized by an Adult Team member, eventually opening up about the details of the tragic day he witnessed his brother’s suicide. Sharing this information without judgment or discussion provided a sense of relief and healing.

Augmenting Emotional Growth:

In August 2021, he attended a weeklong wrestling camp in Rocky Mountain Alberta. The intense physical and mental challenges of the camp led to a breakdown, during which he emotionally recounted the sights, sounds, and smells of the day his brother died by suicide. This vulnerable moment allowed him to confront his fears and express the challenges and trauma faced by his family. Tragically, his worst fears were realized when his brother’s best friend also died by suicide in November 2021. The CBWC and its Adult Team members provided solace and support during this devastating time.

Overcoming Family Struggles:

Throughout 2022, his family continued to struggle and deal with extensive turmoil, with domestic violence incidents and a crumbling marriage. Despite the chaos, he received guidance, counseling, and support from the CBWC’s Adult Team members. In addition, a sibling of his also turned to the staff at this time to seek understanding and advice. In March 2022, he attended training and competition in Alberta, where he continued to receive intensive counseling and unwavering support. In July 2022, as part of Team Nunavut CSG, he underwent daily counseling sessions, navigating the difficult emotions surrounding their family situation. With the support of his teammates and the CBWC, he achieved success and won a very emotional match at CSG.

Moving Forward:

In the fall of 2022, his family was further fractured, with siblings relocating to Iqaluit and he moved to Kelowna, BC with a family acquaintance. Despite the physical distance, the CBWC continued to provide support, and participation in multiple training and competition sessions. The Adult Team members remained steadfast mentors, tutors, counselors, and coaches, ensuring he had the guidance and encouragement needed to navigate his challenging circumstances.

Conclusion:

The Cambridge Bay Wrestling Club stands as a symbol of resilience and transformation in his life. From witnessing unimaginable tragedy and enduring the profound challenges of a broken family, he has found solace, healing, and purpose within the CBWC community. Through the unwavering support, guidance, and mentorship provided by the Adult Team members, he developed emotional resilience, honed his athletic skills, and discovered his advocacy skills.
